In the past, I have made the suggestion to practice, practice, practice. But, I haven’t really told you how to accomplish this task. There are opportunities every day to practice speaking English. I am only going to touch on a few so that you can begin to see some possible situations for practice.

First, be aware of your surroundings. Anywhere there are people, there is a chance to speak English. Public places are always a safe place to begin. Places such as game rooms, restaurants, and public transportation always have people willing to carry on casual conversations. The dialog can be very easy and simple such as, “Hi, how are you?” or, “What is good to eat here?” “Have you been here before?” Simply starting a casual conversation could lead to a great speaking opportunity.

Going to concerts and dances or parties provides another chance to practice your language skills. Taking italki language class online or in person is an excellent way to continue to increase your level of pronunciation and vocabulary. Participation in outdoor activities and traveling puts the learner in touch with native speakers of all levels.

Another thing to try is talking with school administrators and librarians about possibly reading aloud to children or helping them with their own English learning. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and decrease any anxiety that may arise from speaking English.

Religious celebrations and holiday activities are also a good way to develop more advanced skills in speaking English. Most activities such as this require the learner to express their opinions and beliefs. In doing so, you’ll build a stronger vocabulary due to the complexity of the topic of discussion.

One final way is to give public presentations in English. It could be at a business meeting or performing in a play. The language could be memorized prior to the event and then delivered with meaning and expression. Presentations can be a wonderful way to overcome any fears of speaking English.

There are situations that present themselves every day for someone to practice speaking English. Take a walk, volunteer, eat out, shop, travel, take classes, or give presentations. These are just SOME of the ways to practice speaking English.

The general goal for speaking another language is always to communicate with people. Putting oneself in various situations will provide ample opportunity to practice the language and develop meaningful relationships. Communication with others in the world is a marvelous thing. Take every opportunity to connect. There is a whole world waiting for you!

"Take advantage of every opportunity to practice your communication skills so that when important occasions arise, you will have the gift, the style, the sharpness, the clarity, and the emotions to affect other people."  -- Jim Rohn
