Echoes of speech a 10 question reported speech expedition

You can do this test before using the book to help you choose what to
study. Choose the correct answer, A, B or C, for each question. When
you have finished, check your answers by clicking "Check Answers"
button. The key tells you which units are most important for you.

1. She said, ____ to the party.

The original tense should be considered when reporting speech. 'I’m going' (present continuous) is reported as 'She said she was going' (past continuous).

2. He told me, ____ a new car.

Past Perfect is used to show an action completed before another action in the past. The reporting verb is in the past tense, thus requiring a shift to the past perfect in the reported clause.

3. Which is the correct reported speech version of: 'I will help you tomorrow,' he said?

'Will' changes to 'would' in reported speech to reflect the shift in time.

4. They exclaimed, ____ the match!

Simple past tense remains simple past in reported speech unless the context requires a tense shift.

5. Choose the correctly reported sentence for: 'I am studying English,' she said.

Present continuous ('am studying') changes to past continuous ('was studying') in reported speech.

6. He asked me, ____ to the library.

Yes/No questions are reported using 'if' or 'whether'.

7. She wondered, ____ the film.

The tense of the verb changes in reported questions.

8. What's the correct reported form of: 'Where is the station?' he asked.

Wh-questions maintain the wh-word, but the verb tense changes.

9. The teacher announced, ____ the exam.

The context determines the appropriate form; in this case, a noun phrase is needed.

10. He said to her, ____ a good time.

Imperatives are reported using 'to' + infinitive verb.
